The Top Campsites in North America
Sometimes it’s good to get out of the comforts of home and go out into the wild, sleep amongst the stars and recall that more primal part of ourselves that used to hunt for its dinner. Camping is rarely that exciting of course, but at the right location it can offer a new experience every time. With that in mind, lets explore some of the best camping sites in North America.
One of the most interesting places to pitch your campsite is found in one of author Stephen King’s most obsessively used states – in Maine. You may have guessed by now that I’m referring to Acadia National Park, an ideal site for campers of any and all skill levels. Maine is a gorgeous place when it comes to camping, hosting 6,000 lakes, over 30,000 miles of rivers/streams, and of course that which It’s known for best – its pine trees. Nearly 17 acres of them! Acadia National Park is a nature-loving camper’s paradise, and I doubt there are many campers who don’t at least appreciate nature.
Only 94 miles outside of New York City is a surprising gem of a park, which you may have heard of referred to as the Minnewaska State Park Reserve. Surrounded in its entirety by rocky terrains and sitting 2,000 feet above sea level Shawangunk Ridge, this park offers campgrounds as well as a vastly explorable natural environment. It’s definitely among the most recommended campsites for its beauty, biking and hiking options. Mind that it can get rather cold in the later seasons.
If you’re looking for something a bit greener, then the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont may be the place for you. And why wouldn’t it be? It even has ‘green’ in the name. When it comes to this forest, it’s best to pitch your tent somewhere close to its biggest draw – Vermont’s Long Trail. It’s the oldest long-distance trail in the US that spans a little over 270 miles, and is often the main attraction for hikers who come to the area. If you’re a fan of hiking as well as camping, there are few places better for a visit.
If you prefer picturesque sights over hiking grounds, maybe you’d be better attuned to such a place as Maryland’s Assateague Island National Seashore. The campgrounds here are found no more than 9 miles South of Ocean City, and for anyone looking to enjoy a beachside leisurely camping trip, this may very well be the best place to go. You can swim, surf, or bike along the shores to your heart’s content, making for a far more laid-back camping trip, if that’s the sort of thing that interests you.
The US is ripe with beautiful places to go camping, with skill levels varying throughout them all. Regardless of which place you choose, it’s assured that you’ll have an experience that you won’t regret having. The memories made whilst camping are the sorts you don’t forget – so make them legendary ones at these incredible campsites.
